Our main goal when making Suburban Madness was to make the voices of these doctors and patients heard globally. To show the world this glimmer of hope. How it is possible to maintain the joy of life, under extreme circumstances of poverty and crime. How it is possible to treat hundreds of people with a variety of mental disorders with a very limited medical supply.
The beauty that exist within Suburban Madness, the carnival procession of Brazil’s most innovative mental institution, has now reached one of our aims: The Amnesty Head Quarters in London.
Studio Upstairs presents MOVING DALSTON, a collection of images from Hackney’s World Mental Health Day Event, 2010, Gillett Square, Dalston.

Suburban Madness screened at the 12th Irish Latin American Film Festival in Dublin this week and it’ll screen at the KAN Film Festival in Wroclaw, Poland, next as part of their foreign competition.
We’re still looking to take the film further, so if you represent a film festival, TV channel or screening room that would be interested in a film that deals with music, mental illness, samba, carnival, Rio de Janeiro, unconventional treatments etc etc etc, do get in touch!
The Official Jury at the 5th Mostra Miragem Film Festival awarded Suburban Madness an Honorable Mention for its social relevance and dense reflective.
THANK YOU from the entire team!
We’re also in the official selection at the Film Front Film Festival (formerly known as “Vojvodanski festival filma i videa”)
Film Front is organised by Kino Kub Novi Sad, Serbia, and they have the best festival logos I’ve ever seen. The festival runs Dec 13 – 18.
Loucura Suburbana has been selected for the 5th Mostra Miragem Film Festival in North Brazil.
AND Philipp Figueroa has been nominated for the Best New Director Award!
Fingers crossed and hold your thumbs (that’s what we do for good luck where Philipp and I are from)
The film will be screened on 12th December in the following three Brazilian cities: Miracena, Miranorte and Tocantinia e Paraiso.
Best of luck, Philipp

Suburban Madness has been selected for the 9th Discovering Latin America Film Festival here in London! It will screen together with PORTRAIT OF AN ANTIPOET (Chile, 72min) this coming Sunday (November 21) at 12:00 noon at Odeon Panton Street.
This multi-faceted festival is different because it makes a difference. Discovering Latin America is a charitable organisation that seeks to improve the livelihood of underprivileged people in Latin America by sharing Latin American culture, art and creativity with European audiences. This year they’re supporting SALCET to create a new, much-needed drainage system in the village of San Carlos, El Salvador.
So by seeing our film and others at their events, you will also support a worthy cause!
The festival runs from November 18 – 28th

Earlier today it screened in east London with a great selection of short films, all dealing with mental illness, at the Get Moving in Dalston event on Gillett Square, that celebrates World Mental Health Day. This wonderful event was organised by Time to change, Studio Upstairs and the borough of Hackney amongst others.

Suburban Madness (Loucura Suburbana)
Nearly a year ago we held our inofficial premiere screening at the Rio Cinema in Dalston. 11 months and 3 weeks later we’re back, but this time it’s the official UK premiere. The 1st Hackney Film Festival has selected our film from over 150 submissions and it will share the stage with some great shorts; Tony Grisoni’s Kingsland for instance.
JungleDrums wrote a little piece about the film as well. Here’s the pdf with all the info.
But here it goes as well:
3:45pm on Saturday, September 18th.
At the Rio Cinema, Dalston
£5/£4 concs
See you there!
